Global Freight Leader Processes 5M+ Daily Events and Eliminates $4M in Annual SLA Penalties via Boomi

This freight forwarding company was, by revenue, a top-10 global operator. But beneath its impressive market position was a technological liability: a core integration infrastructure built on EDI batch processing from the early 2010s. The company moved cargo via 340 carrier relationships — shipping lines, airlines, rail operators, and port authorities — each of which transmitted shipment status updates, booking confirmations, and bills of lading via scheduled EDI batch files running at 4, 8, and 24-hour intervals. This architecture was catastrophic for customer experience in an era of real-time logistics visibility. When a major storm disrupted Pacific shipping routes in Q2 of a prior year, the company's operations team learned about critical rerouting needs from carrier emails — not from their own systems. By the time the batch files updated SAP S/4HANA, the recommended rerouting window had closed, resulting in 23 containers missing their connecting vessel. The resulting SLA penalties and expediting costs totalled $840,000 for a single weather event. On an annual basis, Flowtaris's pre-engagement assessment documented $4.2M in SLA penalties directly attributable to integration latency. Beyond penalties, the EDI infrastructure was creating a competitive moat problem: onboarding a new enterprise carrier partner took 6 months due to custom EDI format mapping, testing, and certification cycles. Competitors were onboarding equivalent partners in weeks.

Flowtaris led a 14-month integration modernisation programme, retiring all point-to-point EDI connections and replacing them with a unified, event-driven Boomi API mesh. API Strategy & Standardisation: Flowtaris defined a canonical data model for 47 logistics event types — from booking confirmation through final proof of delivery. We engineered 200+ reusable Boomi process components, each handling a specific transformation between carrier-native formats (EDIFACT, X12, proprietary JSON/XML) and the canonical logistics schema. All components were placed under version control and deployed via Boomi's CI/CD pipeline. Real-Time Event Streaming: A Kafka-based event streaming layer was introduced between Boomi and SAP, allowing shipment status updates to propagate to all downstream systems — customer tracking portals, operations dashboards, and the revenue management system — within seconds of a carrier transmission. Average event-to-SAP latency dropped from 4–24 hours to under 8 seconds. Boomi API Management: An API gateway layer was deployed to manage external carrier connectivity. Rate limiting, authentication (OAuth 2.0 and API key), and payload validation were enforced at the gateway — removing these concerns from individual integration flows. A developer portal allows new carriers to self-register and test API connectivity against a sandbox environment without Flowtaris involvement. Partner Onboarding Acceleration: Flowtaris built a library of 120 pre-certified carrier integration templates. New partner onboarding — previously a 6-month custom EDI project — is now an 8-step configuration process completed in 8–14 days.
